If you shoot on RED or Blackmagic cameras, you know the frustration.
You have hours of beautiful footage in R3D or BRAW format. Cinema-quality files with all the flexibility that raw recording provides. But actually working with those files outside of your editing software? That's where things get complicated.
Most media browsers won't touch them. Most asset management tools ignore them entirely. Preview apps show you a blank icon or an error message. You end up either transcoding everything into a viewable format (hours of waiting) or only accessing your footage through your NLE (not ideal when you just want to find something quickly).
For a professional format used on productions worldwide, the tooling around RED and Blackmagic RAW has always been surprisingly limited.
The workaround workflow
Here's what working with raw camera formats typically looks like:
You finish a shoot with terabytes of R3D or BRAW files. To review the footage, you either import everything into Resolve or Premiere (slow, cumbersome if you just want to browse) or you transcode to ProRes or H.264 (time-consuming, doubles your storage needs).
Want to search through old projects? Good luck. You'd need to either keep transcoded copies of everything or fire up your NLE and wait for it to load each project.
Want to let someone else on your team browse the raw footage? They'd need the same software setup you have, plus the knowledge to use it.
The raw files are technically viewable, but practically inaccessible for quick browsing, searching, or organizing.
Native support for professional formats
Vindexr handles RED and Blackmagic RAW files natively.
Import your R3D or BRAW footage directly. No transcoding. No proxies. No waiting for renders. The files play back, the thumbnails generate, and everything works the way it should have worked all along.
This means you can:
- Browse raw footage quickly. Scrub through clips, preview shots, and review content without launching your editing software.
- Search across raw archives. Vindexr transcribes dialogue and indexes visual content from your raw files. Search for what someone said or what appeared on screen, and get results from your R3D and BRAW footage just like any other format.
- Organize without converting. Build collections, tag favorites, and structure your archive while keeping everything in the original raw format.
- Actually use your old footage. That archive of RED files from projects three years ago becomes searchable and browsable, not just a folder of files you'll never open because it's too much hassle.
Why this matters
The whole point of shooting raw is flexibility. You capture maximum quality and make decisions later. Color, exposure, all the creative choices stay open until you're ready to commit.
But that flexibility disappears when you can't easily access the footage.
If reviewing old raw files requires transcoding or project setup, you won't do it. If searching through a RED archive means importing everything into Resolve first, you'll skip it. The friction prevents you from using the footage you paid so much (in time, storage, and equipment) to capture.
Native raw support removes that friction. Your raw footage becomes as accessible as any other format in your library.
How it works
Vindexr uses the official SDKs from RED and Blackmagic to decode their proprietary formats. This means proper playback without quality loss or compatibility issues.
RED's R3D files and Blackmagic's BRAW files both work. Import them, and Vindexr handles the rest: generating thumbnails, transcribing any audio, indexing visual content, and making everything searchable.
The processing happens locally on your machine. No uploading massive raw files to cloud services. No waiting on internet speeds. Your footage stays on your drives where it belongs.
For editors, DITs, and archive managers
If you're an editor who shoots on RED or Blackmagic, this simplifies your personal workflow. Browse and search your footage library without the NLE overhead.
If you're a DIT or post supervisor managing footage from multiple cameras and multiple shoots, native raw support means you can build a searchable archive that includes all formats, not just the ones that happen to be easy to work with.
If you're responsible for an archive of past productions, you can finally make those raw files accessible. Search for shots, find footage, and pull clips from projects that have been sitting on drives for years.
The formats Vindexr supports
Beyond RED and Blackmagic RAW, Vindexr handles the formats you'd expect: ProRes, H.264, H.265, and standard codecs work fine. The goal is to support the footage you actually shoot, not just the footage that's convenient for software developers to implement.
Canon Cinema RAW support is in progress, pending SDK approval from Canon. (They're slow. We're waiting.)
Your raw footage, finally searchable
You invested in cameras that shoot raw for a reason. The image quality, the flexibility, the professional results. Vindexr makes sure that investment doesn't come with a penalty when it's time to actually find and use the footage.
No transcoding. No proxies. No workarounds.
Just your raw files, browsable and searchable like they should be.
